CAFOD
Africa - Sudan - Daily life as a refugee

Since April 2023, the escalating conflict in Sudan has forced millions of people to flee their homes. In crowded refugee camps in neighbouring countries, families are vulnerable to the spread of deadly diseases.

The situation deteriorated in 2024. The conflict shows no sign of ending and, in August of that year, famine was confirmed in parts of North Darfur. Now, over 25 million people – more than half of Sudan’s population – are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

A better world needs all of us. That’s why CAFOD has been working in Sudan since 2004. With your support for our Sudan Emergency Appeal in 2024, local partners are successfully distributing emergency food packages and helping to fix water pipelines damaged by the conflict. We’re also supporting children whose families have been displaced by fighting.

Our impact in 2024

  • Last year, we reached 116,449 people in Sudan.

  • Our healthcare programmes, which are helping to tackle the spread of diseases such as cholera, have reached over 300,000 people.

Why CAFOD works in Sudan

Sudan was already one of the poorest countries in the world (ranked 170 out of 193 countries on the Human Development Index) but two years of civil war have made the situation so much worse.

The war has displaced more than 11.4 million people within Sudan itself and over 3 million people – mostly women and children – have fled to neighbouring countries. Refugee camps along the White Nile in South Sudan are already at four times their capacity, with 1,000 more people seeking shelter every day.

Civilians are bearing the brunt of the conflict. Between April 2023 and October 2024, at least 119 attacks on medical centres were reported, limiting people’s access to life-saving healthcare. There have also been widespread reports of sexual violence committed by both sides and accusations of ethnic cleansing.

Climate change compounds the crisis: heavy rains and flooding have destroyed homes and vital infrastructure, and contributed to a resurgent outbreak of cholera.

Extreme food shortages are also a major issue. In 2024, 750,000 people across Sudan faced “catastrophic food insecurity”, meaning death-by-starvation was a daily occurrence.

How we’re responding

Together, we can build a better world. Donations from you can directly respond to the injustices faced by communities in Sudan. With your support, teams of local experts can work through our trusted Church network to deliver vital aid to the families who need it most.

Our partners in Sudan are currently working on projects that are providing emergency food packages, improving access to clean water, supporting refugees and providing cash assistance.

Current projects

CAFOD partners have been providing emergency food packages and access to hot-soup kitchens to families who have been forced to flee their homes, as well as the communities hosting them.

The ongoing conflict has led to water pipelines being damaged, resulting in communities not having access to clean water and having to resort to fetching water from unsafe locations.

CAFOD’s local partners have been working to repair damaged water pipelines and construct new water facilities to increase the water supply in remote communities.

CAFOD’s local partners are not only supporting people who have been forced from their homes within Sudan, they are also supporting refugees from neighbouring countries who now find themselves in dire need of emergency aid such as water, food and medicine.

CAFOD’s cash voucher programmes are helping vulnerable families to buy essentials like food and hygiene kits to stay healthy and prevent the spread of dangerous diseases like cholera.
