Anuarite's life has changed since joining a savings and loans community in Goma, DRC. She was able to start her own business and pay for her children's schooling.
“Mary said, 'Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.'”
As we listen to the story of the Annunciation, we once again celebrate Mary’s generous and courageous ‘Yes’ to this startling and disruptive call from God. She chooses openness to God’s invitation, no matter the consequences for her life.
Mary's fiat is given freely, despite the uncertainty of what it will mean, and she never once withdraws that ‘Yes’. She continues to hope and trust in God, even in the face of immense suffering, including the heartbreak of her son's crucifixion. In doing so, she shows us how to live a life of hope.
In the Papal Bull of Indiction for this Jubilee Year, Pope Francis writes,
“Hope finds its supreme witness in the Mother of God. In the Blessed Virgin, we see that hope is not naive optimism but a gift of grace amid the realities of life.” (Spes non confundit, #24)
On this feast of the Annunciation of the Lord, let’s pray for the openness and courage to say yes to God’s call. With Mary’s help and example, may we journey as pilgrims of hope, so we too can play our role in the restoration of God’s creation.
Mary, Mother of the whole human family, you freely accepted God's invitation. Pray that we too will be full of hope and have the courage to say yes to God. Amen.
