God knows each one of us by name. Even before we are born, we are loved and cherished. God has a plan for us and like a loving parent wants us to reach our full potential.
When asked if he would like his 13-year-old son to follow in his footsteps as a fisherman, Tekon in Liberia replies:
“I want my son to decide what he wants to do. His mother says she wants him to be a doctor. I want him to decide what he wants to do.”
But then he adds: “I wouldn’t want him to be a fisherman. If he asked, I wouldn’t let him! After spending all my money on his education and then he asks to fish!” Tekon laughs. “He’s not going near fishing. It’s risky.”
We can work together to support parents wherever they are in the world, so that their children may have the opportunity to learn, grow and flourish in whatever life path they choose. Let us try to ensure that all children have the chance to reach their full potential. And may we care for the earth, our common home, so that now and in generations to come, all people may thrive.
Prayer
God our Father, you knew each of us by name before you formed us in the womb. Help us to be the people you know and want us to be, and to work together so all your children may realise their dreams. Amen.
