This grass sprang up when the rains finally returned to northern Kenya
“Let us press on to know the Lord; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth.”
Today’s first reading offers the evocative image of the Lord coming to us like the spring rains. It is a vision of a God who is very close to his people, who refreshes and renews Israel, bringing hope and vitality.
It is an image that would surely speak to Lokho, a pastoralist who recalls how bad things were in her village in northern Kenya after long years of drought. She tells us:
“Due to climate change, we didn’t have any rain for almost three years; that caused the shortage of water and of the pasture in the area, and that caused the death of the livestock… When the rains finally came, we sighed with relief.”
This Lent let us press on to know the Lord, seeking his presence that falls on us like the gentle spring rain. Refreshed by God’s love, may we seek to bring new life and hope through the love and care we show the world and our global family.
Transforming God, rain down your compassion on us, open our hearts to the lives and lands suffering due to the climate crisis. Strengthen us to act justly, wisely and urgently so that together we may heal the earth. Amen.
