Lent calendar 5 March

Lunchtime Mass at a CAFOD event at St Mary’s College, Oscott

Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.

Joel 2:13

Lent is a time for us to turn back to God. It is a time to reflect on the choices we make and the way we live our lives, to seek forgiveness for where we have gone wrong, and to draw closer to God. It is a time to pray, to fast, and to share what we have with others.

In this Jubilee Year, the call to renew our faith and live differently is even stronger. The Church has dedicated a whole year to considering how we can start anew and restore the balance in our society, so that all people may flourish.

It can be tricky to know where to begin, and all too easy to put things off. Perhaps it will be easier in an hour, a day, or a week’s time? But as St Paul reminds the Corinthians in today’s second reading: “Now is the favourable time.”

So, let us commit to not putting off until tomorrow what we can do today. In the knowledge of God’s love and mercy, we open our hearts this Lent to be transformed in prayer and inspired to take action.

We know that a better world needs all of us, and we seek to play our part.

Prayer

Merciful God, open our hearts to your love as we turn back to you this Lent. Lead us to share this love with one another as we work together to bring about a better world. Amen.
